On 30th August 2026, INF Nepal Emergency Medical Services Team moved to Bidur Municipality–8, Nuwakot, with essential medical supplies, where Bhairum Secondary School is currently serving as a mass shelter for about 1,500 displaced and affected people following the Bhotekoshi flash flood.

With many people potentially having immediate medical needs, the team prepared to provide health services through medical supplies and an upcoming health camp to address urgent health needs identified at the shelter.

  

On 1st September, INF Nepal’s emergency medical team provided immediate healthcare support to 138 people (including 80 women and 58 men), affected by the flash floods, who are currently staying at the school. Similarly, the team provided medical assistance to 41 individuals (27 women and 14 men) on 2nd September. Most of the cases included injury dressing (26 cases on the first day and 8 cases on the second day) affected by the disaster. Besides these, other cases included long-term medicine users, counseling while also high cases of fever, stomach pain, skin issues, eye irritation mostly among children.

Currently, there are 6 holding centres in Nuwakot including the school being the largest amongst all. However, there are still many people who are unable to access the support. Our another response team is regularly coordinating with Nuwakot District Health Office to reach them. The team is preparing to deploy to conduct further assessment of needs and gaps in the affected areas. The findings will help INF Nepal determine how best to strengthen and target its response.

Dr Rajendra Lama, Director of Trisuli District Hospital, visited the INF health team working at Bhairum Secondary School and praised the team members for their tireless work and commitment during this difficult time. Seeing the team providing health services to people displaced and affected by the Bhotekoshi flash floods, he encouraged INF to continue extending its support to the affected communities in Nuwakot. He described the INF team’s presence on the ground as promising and helpful, recognising their efforts to respond to the immediate health needs of people sheltering at the site.

An elderly woman arrived at the health camp looking extremely weak and frail. She had a high fever, was struggling to breathe, and was even finding it difficult to speak or take her medicines. Following the doctor’s prescription, she was given an injection and kept under close observation because of her condition. After several hours of care and observation, she began to regain some strength and showed signs of recovery. Slowly, she approached a member of the INF health team and, with gratitude, said:

“I am alive now. You have done a great deed for me.”

Another woman came to the health camp seeking medicine for her blood pressure. Unfortunately, the medicine prescribed for her was not available at the time. The health team asked her to return the following day, when additional medical supplies were expected to arrive from Pokhara. The next day, when the supplies arrived, the team waited for her so that she could receive the medicine she needed. They also looked out for her and later learned that she had been searching through the remains of the disaster for her husband.

“It was heartbreaking to witness,” recalls Kamala Prasai, a member of the INF emergency health team. The woman was relieved and grateful to receive her medicine. But, as Kamala reflects, there was no way to measure the depth of the suffering she was carrying—not only from the disaster, but from searching for someone she loved.
